Celebrity Katherine Heigl debuts pet nutrition brand
PARK CITY, UTAH Katherine Heigl, an actress, animal advocate and philanthropist, made her first foray into the pet food space with her new brand, Badlands Ranch, on Aug. 25. Named after Heigls ranch in Utah, Badlands Ranch offers gently cooked dog food.
Badlands Ranch was created to deliver delicious products that nourish dogs inside and out for overall health while placing animal welfare as our top priority, Heigl said.
Heigl was inspired to create the pet nutrition brand by her familys ranch in Utah, which prioritizes animal welfare. The ranch provides medical care, obedience training and home placement to dogs throughout the United States in partnership with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, an organization founded by Heigl and her family that strives to rescue pets from high-kill shelters.
The Badlands Ranch pet food brand utilizes slow-cooked, freeze-dried and air-dried methods to develop its pet foods and help ensure freshness and high-quality nutrition. The brands flagship product is Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete, a complete-and-balanced diet formulated with superfoods, like flaxseeds, turmeric and lions mane mushrooms.
As well as superfoods, Superfood Complete also contains adaptogens, ranch-raised beef, salmon, vegetables, and a blend of vitamins and minerals. The air-dried formula can help promote healthy digestion and skin and coat health. The dog food can be served dry, as well as rehydrated with warm water to add a boost of hydration.
Badlands Ranch also released its first dog treat: Superfood Bites. The single-ingredient treat is made from freeze-dried raw beef liver, providing dogs with high quality protein. Superfood Bites do not contain fillers, preservatives or artificial ingredients.
We're pleased to be able to serve a bigger purpose, Heigl said. When your dog eats Superfood Complete, you're not just helping them achieve a healthier life, you're helping another dog in need get nutritious food, too.

The Best Dog Food of 2024
Dogs need animal protein even if you're a vegetarian, your dog can not be. But grains, fruits and vegetables are all perfectly okay to be in your dog's food along with the meat, poultry or fish that is their main sustenance.
Trust the vet: "Your veterinarian knows your dog's specific needs and can provide valuable guidance on selecting the right dog food," Dr. Caos says. "They can consider factors like age, breed, size, activity level and any health conditions in order to recommend an appropriate diet."
Your dog will have opinions: You can lead a dog to a premium kibble but you can't necessarily make it eat. You may need to try a few flavors to hit on what they love, so buy a small bag when you're trying a new dog food.
Find a formula that fits them: While puppy food may be formulated to support their growth, senior dog food is created to help their joints, bone and skin as they get old. The American Kennel Club notes that large dogs can be more prone to musculoskeletal problems than their small breed counterparts, so you'll want to ensure that you're purchasing dog food specifically for large breeds if you've got one, since it has a different balance of nutrients. Smaller dogs, meanwhile, benefit from a food for them that has smaller kibble pieces that are easier for them to eat.
Check the ingredient list: "High-quality ingredients [should be] the primary components of the dog food," Dr. Cao says. "The first few ingredients should ideally be named animal protein sources, such as chicken, beef or fish. Avoid foods that list vague terms like 'meat meal' as the main protein source."
Your vet can also tell you if there's anything to avoid with your dog. For instance, most dogs don't need grain-free dog food, but some dogs do benefit from it. "If your dog has specific dietary restrictions or allergies, choose a food that accommodates those needs," Dr. Caos says. The FDA studied grain-free dog food to see if there was a link between it and canine heart disease; the study was inconclusive. A more recent study from the University of Missouri found no link between grain-free diets and the development of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). But to be safe, don't put your pet on a grain-free diet until you've received clearance from the veterinarian.
Get expert-formulated recipes: To ensure your pet is getting the healthiest (and tastiest) chow, you'll want to look for brands that use board-certified nutritionists to formulate the diet. This means they'll test for nutrient content and adequacy, and assess the food for contaminants. Most major brands do this.
Alton Brown put himself and his dog on a diet. Then, he ate her food
Sure, you love your dog. But do you love your dog as much as Alton Brown loves his dog? Enough to taste-test her food, for instance is that too much to ask?
Not for Brown, it isnt. After all, this is a man who once revealed that hisfavorite ice cream is a recipe he concocted with his daughter involving gin, Welchs grape juice, prunes and gummy bears except the green ones, which throw everything off in a really bad way. The celebrated chef and Food Network star is famously willing to put his taste for adventure ahead of... other tastes.
But right now, there is less booze and sugar than usual in Browns life. That's because he is on a diet, and the reason is the same one that bedevils us all, particularly at this time of year, when cozying up with comfort food seems all too appealing.
I have always self-rewarded liberally," Brown, 59, told TODAY by phone, laughing. And from time to time I have the elastic pants to prove it.
So, what to do? Many experts recommend having a weight-loss buddy to keep you accountable. But Browns four-legged ally isnt exactly a model of self-control: She steals his food and has bad table manners. Shes gotten over the mange that plagued her when Brown and hiswife, Elizabeth, adopted her three years ago. But she still bears the name they bestowed on their new dog during that unfortunate period: Scabigail.
She was a rescue that had been heavily neglected; she weighed just 7 pounds and was covered in scabs, Brown recalled. She would eat anything small rocks, insects because shed been starved. Shewas so malnourished that the vets werent able to figure out how old she was because everything was so underdeveloped. But thats the problem: Nutrition changes everything. If theyre not fed properly when theyre puppies, nothings quite right.
For a hungry puppy, Scabigailsure hit the jackpot. Being rescued by a famous chef has its perks, and she is not shy about making the most of her good fortune.
On the set of Good Eats one time, there was a turkey leg on a table and Scabs jumped up on the banquette, jumped from there up to the table, andwas goneout the back door. The only reason we knew what happenedis that there was a greasespot left on the table where the turkey leg used to be, Brown said, marveling at the stunt.
We, uh... we had to have words.
By this winter, such appetites had caught up with them both. I put myself on a diet and her on a diet at the same time, Brown said. Im probably going to fail at my diet. Im not good at self-denial, especially if I get home and I really want a cocktail, but Im only allowing myself cocktails on the weekend. Its hard to break habits; we reward ourselves too I had a really long day; I didnt yell at anybody.' But Im a human and I can make decisions and reason with myself that I dont like the way these pants fit.
For Scabigail, the indicators were more subtle. Brown knew she was, as his wife puts it, curvy, but it was her loud snoring that served as a literal wake-up call. Their research led them to atoolon the Hills Pet Nutrition website to help crunch some numbers. According to Hills, 90% of people with an overweight pet dont realize it.
There are a lot of tools on their site the body assessment tool is especially strong but you cant leave your vet out, Brown said. Im a big believer in vets; the rest of us think were experts and were not.
The stark math revealed the regrettable truth: Scabigail was overweight. Brown asked the vet how much she needed to lose to be the optimum weight and got a number one he sensitively declined to share with TODAY. Thus began a joint weight loss journey between man and mans best friend.
As someone whos as into food as I am, I had not given a lot of thought to what a dog/pet needs; there are very specific things to maximize their metabolism and overall health and keep their weight down, said Brown, who has now partnered with Hills Pet Nutrition, a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive. Keeping weight down is as important for animals as it is for humans. Investing in the right food is the same as investing in your dogs health.
Switching up Scabigails food was the first step. But as a chef, Brown takes a personal approach to quality control. So, yeah he ate the dog food. I dont feed my dog anything I havent tasted. Both the kibble and the canned food I couldnt resist. I need to know what it tastes like. I had a big ol spoonful.
He added, joking: I think that if I was going to live on the canned food, Id probably heat it up, though.
A spokesperson for Hills stated that the company does not recommend any pet parent eat pet food.
The new diet earned human as well as canine approval. Hills puts considerable energy into building the nutrition in the food and also they know that if the animal doesnt want to eat it, its not going to make any difference, said Brown.
I dont feed my dog anything I havent tasted. Both the kibble and the canned food I couldnt resist. I need to know what it tastes like.
Alton Brown
Like many devoted pet owners, not to mention celebrity chefs, Brown has experimented with homemade dog food and dog treats in the past (They tasted pretty good!), but ultimately decided to leave the nutritional choices to the experts. I can cook up sweet potatoes and chicken, but at the end of the day, its very complex, keeping an animal running at peak condition, getting a dogs digestive tract to really absorb the nutrition properly.
That healthy gut we cant provide the probiotics that a dog needs or a cat needs, he added, so its well-meaning and its lovely to think we can cook special food for our animals, but I do not believe we can.
After gettingScabigails diet right, there were other challenges to reckon with namely, that Brown brings his dogs to work with him every day. Weve got a relatively large test kitchen and Scabsknows how to work it. Shes fairly adorable; shes got a blue eye and a brown eye and shes got favorite spots to hang out. She knows whos most likely to drop something off the counter, Brown said. Scabs gets a lot of food that hits the floor. A 1-ounce piece of cheese is enough calories for her for a whole meal, but not much actual nutrition.
Test kitchen antics aside, Scabs is doing well on her diet. Its only been a few weeks and shes already lost some weight and is acting a lot more lively. Being able to make a commitment towards dieting with your dog, it feels good to see your dog want something and give it to them its an endorphin rush, but that should probably end with snuggles or play instead of treats, Brown said. Weve upped our play. She used to get tired after five minutes of tug of war now its 15. Now shes the one wearing me out!
As most pet parents know, the bonus of keeping pets healthy is that increased activity is good for us, too. It makes me stop in my day, reminds me to play. Dogs are nothing if not present, said Brown.
The new regimen has even improved Scabigailsmanners: She really likes the food a great deal. Because its got higher fiber, its keeping her full longer and shes not begging as much. She was a really bad beggar, jumping up on me all the time. I suspect the fiber is keeping her more satisfied.
Browns final tip for petowners is one familiar to parents of small humans: Dont let them play one parent against the other. Dogs play both hands along the middle if Im not getting treats from Mommy, Im going to try to get them from Daddy. Dogs learn systems and they learn habits. If the habit is Daddys going to reach into that drawer and give me a treat at 3 p.m., then thats what they expect. But thats actually good because we can use that to our advantage and their advantage.
In the Brown household, that now means portioning out treats from Scabigails daily food amount at the beginning of the day and agreeing that when theyre gone, theyre gone.
We give treats because we like giving them, and then people say, My dogs getting old; They dont play like they used to play; or, They sleep all the time now, Brown said.
Maybe your dog is just overweight.
CORRECTION (Feb. 3, 2022, 5:43 p.m.): An earlier version of this article stated that Hill's estimates that 99% of people with an overweight pet dont realize it. Hill's revised its estimate to 90%, not 99%.
CLARIFICATION (Feb. 8, 2022, 9:55 a.m.): A spokesperson for Hill's clarified that the company does not recommend people eat pet food, as noted in this updated article.
